I’m really starting to get into the idea of energy shots.  While there are some energy drinks out there I like just as much as any soda, there are times where I just want the hit of caffeine without the wait.  Some days a nice drink on the way in to work is exactly what I need…others I just wake up and need an instant boost and that’s all there is to it.  That is where the energy shots come in.

Upshot is a bit larger than most energy shots out there.  It actually took me 2 drinks to get it all down.  In the end that is probably a good thing because the intense flavors you get from the caffeine and other ingredients is more evenly distributed making it quite a bit better tasting.  Now I know I have said it before, but you don’t really drink energy shots for the taste…you drink them for the quick and powerful boost….but even then there is something to be said for a drink that doesn’t make you want to chase it down with a bar of soap just to get rid of a horrible flavor.  Luckily Upshot is not at all that bad.  The base flavor to Upshot Fruit is kind of hard to put my finger on.  It says that it’s a mix of tropical fruits and I seem to taste some passion fruit in there, but I think there is also a bit of raspberry….over all it’s a pretty flavorful combination of stuff that would probably make a pretty damn good full size drink  if it was handled right.  There is so much flavor in it that it’s really hard to break down….calling it “Fruit” is in all honesty, about as accurate a term as it is a generic one.  There is a bit of harshness in the back of the flavor due to the caffeine, but given how fast most of you will down it, you probably won’t think much of it at all.

The intense fruit flavor in Upshot is very much a necessity….there is 200mg of caffeine hidden inside this tiny bottle…and when you down it, it all hits you at once.  This is not you typical energy rush…this is an instant ON switch to your freakin soul man!  In a short matter of minutes I was wired…totally awake.  Jittery, sure…a bit edgy and jumpy, sure…but definitely awake….WIRED awake.  Now the downside to this is that it wears off about as fast as it comes on.  That can be a problem when you are dealing with high rushes like this.  The crash you get can put you in a worse situation that you started with…for some it might be so bad that it’s not even worth it.  As a matter of fact drinking half the bottle, waiting for it to hit you, and then drinking the other half would probably be a better way to go because it would draw out the effects, make them last longer, and not give you such a huge hit at the end.  On the bottle there is actually a suggestion of mixing the contents with juice.  If you needed a good strong jolt without the massive initial hit and the inevitable crash that would be a VERY good way to go.  Adding it to something like grape juice or orange juice would probably be pretty tasty, a bit safer, and allow you to get more out of each bottle.  As a matter of fact, I’ll probably try and draw out the dosage with the next flavor of Upshot I have to review…we know what it does all at once, so might as well see how well things go when it’s split up.

Now on another note, this stuff would ROCK as a mixer in something like a martini.  The flavor is quite strong so it would not take but maybe a quarter bottle to make a decent drink….I really need to try and get my hands on another one of these fruit flavored Upshots to test this theory….I’m guessing it would make one hell of a party drink.
