So far I have not been too impressed with fruit punch flavored energy drinks. Pretty much all of them have missed the mark so my hopes were not set to high when I received the Boo Koo version. Now Boo Koo has been a pretty off and on brand…some of their drinks I really love, some just aren’t quite there…..Punch is one of those that is not quite there unfortunately.
Take Hawaiian Punch, remove 50% of the water so you have a concentrated version, add caffeine and ginseng, and there you go. The first sip of Boo Koo Punch is overwhelming…the flavor is insanely sweet and tart with an odd metallic feel. There is DEFINITLY nothing smooth about this stuff. Every inch of it is harsh…like drinking the fruit punch equivalent of sand paper. The after taste left a sort of gritty dry feel to my mouth. You know how some colas make you teeth feel like they sort of get sticky and grind together? That’s what seemed to happen to my entire freakin’ mouth. It’s like the Hawaiian Punch mascot went out on a long weekend bender of Hawaiian Punch and Vodka and then peed in my mouth….just not a pleasant experience at all. The biggest problem here though really seems to be that Boo Koo punch is just TOO strong. The flavor is to concentrated….like it really needs to be diluted down to about 50% of what it is. I think the flavor would probably not be that bad if the concentration was tweaked a bit, but as it sits it’s just kind of an over kill.
So the power is what you’d expect from a Boo Koo beverage (on the plus side). It’s got a nice kick to it and it definitely hangs around for a while. As a matter of fact, I’d go as far as to say it actually works better than some of their other drinks do to the harshness of the flavor itself. The taste actually helps to kick your ass awake because it is so damn strong. Your first sip definitely pops your eyes open, and from then on out our good old friend caffeine is there to pick up the slack. Not something I would recommend for sports, but early in the morning I definitely noticed the effects when I popped open a can on my drive in to work…damn near instant awake.
So while I wouldn’t say this would be something I’d pick up typically for my energy needs, I will say that it would probably make a hell of a mixer. It’s so strong that diluting it with ice and alcohol would more than likely make a hell of a drink. You could probably make a pretty decent frozen drink with this stuff too….definitely worth experimenting with in the mixed drink department…no doubt.
And by the way, DO NOT DRINK THIS STUF RIGHT AFTER BRUSHING YOUR TEETH. I don’t know how to be more clear on that….It was a hell of a lesson to learn, save yourself the pain…
