The monster sized can of BooKoo was the first energy drink I reviewed on this site, and if you go back and read the review for it you’ll see that I pretty much hated it.  It is not something I have ever had the urge to try again so I was quite skeptical when I saw that BooKoo had expanded their line with a bunch of new products.  Once again we have a situation where my skepticism was proven unjustified.

BooKoo Citrus is good.  I like it…actually I like it quite a bit.  Maybe I’m just a sucker for orange flavored drinks…I don’t know.  I can say that in the past orange sodas have been pretty much at the bottom of my list on things to buy, but recently the energy drink world has started to shift my taste.  BooKoo Citrus at first reminds me of orange hard candies, or triple sec minus the alcohol…there is a strange artificial orange flavor at the back of the drink that initially I didn’t really care for to much.  After the second sip that is pretty much gone and all you have left is what I could best describe as Tang breakfast drink in candy form….weird, I know, but it’s as close as I can come to describing it…BooKoo Citrus has a slight bite to it, and a very orange candyish aftertaste…it’s not a smooth drink, but this is yet again one of those times where that is not a bad thing….it’s citrus by damn…and when was the last time you had a smooth orange?  As a matter of fact that brings up another point…the name Citrus is a bit deceiving….all I pretty much taste is orange.  There may be a hint of something else, but for me the orange is by far the strongest showing…again, that is not at all a bad thing.  I’d actually prefer to see more drinks going with oranges, as a base in “citrus” drinks than the boring ass standard of lemon-lime.

The power of BooKoo is nice and strong as you would expect from a 16oz drink.  It seemed to last quite a bit longer than others as well which is always nice.  While I did get a good solid initial kick from BooKoo, that went away pretty quickly.  The over all effect lasted a good solid hour after the initial blast though it was a steady decline (some drinks effects seem to just stop almost instantly causing a horrible crash.)  BooKoo seems like it would be a good drink for early morning, or late night partying!

Over all BooKoo Citrus is definitely worth a shot…especially if you are tired of the same old stuff.  Where the old BooKoo failed, Citrus stands up rather well!

On a side note, this would make a really good mixer for any drink requiring Triple Sec.  Add a bit of vodka, or dare I say a dash of Everclear and you’ll have a home made energy Triple Sec!

Sugar Free Kabbalah Energy Drink

Cost: $? 12oz

Taste: 7 (for sugar free drinks)

Power: 6

The good stuff: Taurine, B Vitamins, Caffeine

Now most people know that I despise sugar free or diet drinks.  Typically I refuse to review them because I can’t be fair.  Every once in a while someone will send me a drink that is sugar free and even against my warnings, request that I write up a review on a sugar free energy drink…Kabbalah is exactly just such an example.

I have to start off by saying that this drink is very good for a diet drink.  The flavor of Kabbalah goes very well with the typical aftertaste you get from a sugar free drink, while doing it’s best to mask it.  The weird and expected flavor is there, but you can actually get by it which is saying a lot for me.  Where as many drinks are completely overpowered by the flavor of Splenda, Kabbalah just kind of merges in and bumps it to the back.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’d still rather have the normal version of Kabbalah, but if I was going to make the plunge to the healthier side of life this would definitely be an easy start.  Something I do feel I need to mention however is this:  The Splenda flavor does NOT adapt out.  All the way till the end of the can I could still taste it.  Now with some diet drinks your taste buds will kind of forget about the strange or unpleasant flavors they have……here, that’s not quite the case.  Kabbalah still does a pretty solid job of taking the edge off and making the drink all around bearable….which does say quite a bit for the Kabbalah formula.

Power wise it’s about there with the standard Kabbalah…could be stronger for my taste, but it definitely works.  This is a drink that will perk you up without putting you into a sugar induced coma, or pumping you full of calories (it has less than 3 per can.)

Overall, if you like energy drinks, want a low calorie, or a sugar free alternative Sugar Free Kabbalah is probably going to sit pretty well for you…for the rest of us there is always the original!
