Taste: 6.5
Power: 8.5

One of the really cool things about traveling across Texas is that you never know what you are going to find when you pull over in a small town. More often than not I run across candy I thought was long retired, new forms of snacks and now, quite regularly, new energy drinks. The next few drinks I’m reviewing were all products of this exact phenomenon…but I really hope the other two have a stronger showing….
Nitro2Go is best described as a wanna-be Red Bull in a 16oz can. I have tried several RB clones, and on several occasions I have actually preferred the taste-alike over the real thing. Unfortunately, this would not be the case for Nitro2Go…..what you get is 16oz of a less refined RB…more artificial flavor, more of the strange Flintstones vitamin taste, a little less of the odd aftertaste, and a little less smoothness. Now that being said, I have to add that this stuff is really not ALL that bad. It’s actually quite drinkable, but as I mentioned before, not quite as refined as it could be. As a matter of fact, by the time you get halfway through the can you are so used to it all that you’d think it was in fact a Red Bull. Basically what you have here is a superbly mediocre tasting drink…nothing amazing, nothing overly crappy….it’s not a Silence of the Lambs, and it’s not a Van Helsing…more like a Batman Returns. On the plus side, you’ll immediately recognize the flavor, and you do get 16oz at the same price as an 8oz Red Bull, so I suppose it all balances out in the end.
Sticking with the Red Bull comparison, Nitro2Go delivers the RB power in double the dose. Oddly enough, after half the can I felt like I just had a RB, but after downing the rest I didn’t have double the rush, but more of an elevated lift. It was a good wakeup call in the morning, and probably enough to keep you going pretty good at a party.
If I see Nitro2Go on the shelf next to a Red Bull odds are I’ll grab it over the RB…..more drink for the dollar with only a slight drop in quality, and a bit more of a kick. It’s not a drink I’d recommend as a must try, but it definitely holds its own as an alternative…Hell, the 16oz can at the 8oz price is enough to make up for any of the other deficiencies that Nitro2Go might have.
